千葉県千葉郡幕張町実籾（現・習志野市東習志野）には、1915年（大正4年）9月から1920年（大正9年）1月までの間、第一次世界大戦中に日本の捕虜となったドイツ兵約1000人が収容されていた「習志野捕虜収容所」がありました。 大正7年、高栄養価食品としてソーセージに注目していた当時の農商務省は、ドイツ国内でソーセージ職人だったカール・ヤーン氏ら5人が、実際に収容所内でソーセージを製造している事を知り、千葉市に新設された農商務省畜産試験場の飯田吉英（ヨシフサ）技師を収容所に派遣し、カール・ヤーン氏達からソーセージ製造の秘伝を公開してもらいました。 このソーセージ製造技術が、農商務省が開催した講習会を通じ、日本全国の食肉加工業者たちに伝わっていく事になったのです。この事から、習志野市は「日本のソーセージ製法 伝承の地」といわれるようになりました。

習志野市 昭和29年（1954年）8月1日、それまでの「千葉郡津田沼町」は新しく千葉県下で16番目、全国で415番目の「習志野市」として発足しました。「習志野」の名称は、陸軍大演習の際に明治天皇が命名されたものです。 明治6年（1873年）4月、明治天皇を迎えて行われた陸軍大演習の際、全体指揮をとった篠原陸軍少将のめざましい活躍を称え、「篠原を見習うように」とのお言葉があり、このことから「見習篠原」が「見習志野原」になり、習志野原になったという説があります。
