Transasia airways says pilots to face skills test after crash

Updated

A Melbourne airport worker has been arrested over a fatal incident involving a plane and a motorcycle during a training flight.

Two people were killed in the February incident at the Bairnsdale airport, but it is understood about 18 passengers were on board when the plane slammed into an unoccupied motorcycle, forcing the plane to crash-land.

One of those killed in that incident had been training to fly in the area.

It is understood police have issued warrants for the owner and passenger of a red Yamaha and two people believed to be pilots.

The plane was part of the airway training program and had been scheduled to leave Melbourne at 8:15am today.

The Australian Federal Police says it was a training flight operated by a company called Bairnsdale Aircraft.

The two passengers and the pilot were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

On the same day, Bairnsdale Airlines released a statement saying it "deeply regrets the tragic events involving our flight during last night's training program", and offered its "heartfelt apologies" to the people involved.

Bairnsdale's official Facebook page also says one of its pilots, Michael Kowalski, was on duty at the airport when the incident took place.

Pickett claims norm smith medal after getting a 'first' in all tests

'If you look at my training this year, this is where I am best suited to be.

'I've been playing for two years so there is not much I can learn, whether it is just the new ball or whether it is on the wing. It's going to take time, I can only take this experience.

'My next objective is to train with the under 21s at Under-20 level, but I have to work my way up and I have to know that I can still be a full time centre back.

'There are a lot of good, talented players that are in this generation, but there needs to be a consistency with the under-21s, where I have to play a high level of football. It's a different beast when you come from the under 17s.'

Robson admitted last season's disappointment with his lack of progress in his new position has made him reluctant to continue with his loan spell at Bolton.

Police investigate fatal crash of Nissan Murano at Hollywood and Mission streets

A motorcycle crash Friday afternoon claimed the life of a 22-year-old man who was riding his motorcycle near the Hollywood and Mission streets intersection.

The crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m., said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Peter Jordan, adding that the male victim was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Jordan said the intersection has seen more crashes this weekend, with four other people killed on the freeway this year. There have been six fatal motorcycle accidents, including those in the past two weeks, in South Los Angeles.

Jordan said the collision involved a silver Hyundai Murano SUV about six-meters down the center median.

The crash occurred between the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Mission Boulevard, and witnesses said the vehicle struck a silver Suzuki SUV in front of the Honda Accord before it skidded onto the median.

In the meantime, investigators were trying to determine what caused the crash. The intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Mission Street is a narrow two-lane road, and it is usually not a popular spot for cyclists, so it could be easy for a driver to take advantage of the light speed.

Jordan said it was too soon to speculate on the cause of the crash, and police were still working to verify the crash occurred in a well-traversed area.

At an afternoon press conference, Jordan said it appeared the two vehicles were traveling at high speeds, as it appeared they were both going at full-throttle when they struck.

The two vehicles were both driven by teenagers, Jordan said, all of whom were also riding their motorcycles. The injured rider, who Jordan said was in critical condition, was identified as a resident of the neighborhood, according to Jordan.

Jordan said it's believed the drivers tried to park the Honda around the corner, but the driver of the Suzuki didn't stop as it turned right and headed straight down Hollywood Boulevard, into a car wash.

Jordan said the driver of the Suzuki jumped the curb and then accelerated into the Honda, which skidded on the median, before coming to a stop about a block away from where the Honda collided with the Honda.

Jordan said the two vehicles are being looked at by both the state and local police.

Jordan added that the intersection is currently closed as crews work to repair the damaged vehicle.

State schools using debt collectors to chase fees for attending classes has been around since the mid-1990s, but a law to regulate them went into effect in 2009. Now a state audit is looking at how schools are collecting money for students attending classes that might not actually take place -- in part because students are using borrowed money.

When school officials request and collect money from a student, they usually are required to notify the student of their reason for doing so. The student has the right to object and have the debt collection agency take the student to court.

The state auditor recently released a report in which it looked at hundreds of student-related court cases that resulted in judgments of upwards of $100,000. That includes $31,000 in student fees.

"In a small number of cases, there has been a large volume of collections, with approximately $600,000 collected as an out-of-pocket burden for students," the state auditor report states.

One of those cases involved four students who were on a high school scholarship when they graduated. A lawyer, a financial planner, and an accountant all worked on the scholarship committee. A teacher was trying to assist them in paying for the scholarship. In the end, the student got the student debt.

"These students knew from a very early age that they were getting free and subsidized schooling, and they were not being treated the same way the rest of the students were," said Edith Bostrom, an advocate at the Alliance for Children and Families.

The two lawyers, both lawyers, received money from the schools when their fees for helping the students were collected, the report states.

And in another case, a student was sent to the school district to attend an out-of-state academic conference in which she was not supposed to be a student. She received a lawyer's fee for helping her.

And the report found a number of school officials were not following proper procedures.

"We can't know how many of the cases involve students who may have been involved in an extracurricular activity or who may have taken advantage of a free credit or loan option or who may not have taken advantage of other programs which could have been available," the report said.

Bostrom's group, which is advocating to change New York's student financial debt laws, said the problem goes far deeper than simple miscommunication.
