Kempsey not truck free despite bypass

Sporting Kansas City announced on Thursday that center back Dax McCarty, originally drafted by the Colorado Rapids in the sixth round (No. 77 overall), will not be free to sign a contract with Kansas City after not being offered a contract. "We would like to thank Dax for all of his years with Sporting Kansas City," Sporting KC Director of Soccer Operations Peter Vermes said in a statement released by Sporting KC. "We wish him the best for the future."

McCarty was acquired during the offseason from MLS side Chivas USA and has already made seven appearances this season while earning two starts. He has yet to play a minute on the pitch at Sporting Park, though he had a chance to do so earlier this year, taking the field against D.C. United for the first time since injuring his left knee during a preseason test.

The news that he won't be allowed to be a free agent in January is certainly welcome news to fans of both parties but it should not affect the future of McCarty given he has made over 1000 appearances for Sporting KC in all competitions as well as playing for Sporting Kansas City and Chivas USA.

McCarty was acquired by the LA Galaxy from MLS side New York City FC in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, where he was previously an international player. He has a number of goals and assists to his name across all competitions for the Galaxy, including winning MLS Save of the Week in April during the Galaxy's 2-0 victory over Toronto FC. McCarty joined Seattle Sounders FC in the offseason and started five matches for the Sounders, scoring one goal and two assists in two appearances.

Sporting Kansas City will move forward in hopes of signing another center back to join its roster after the acquisition of the Argentine. Kansas City will attempt to sign center back Jair Benitez on Jan. 11 at 1:00 p.m. PT via a formal bid on the club's official website, and the transaction should go through before Saturday morning. The deal should take place between Friday afternoon and Sunday morning, with the contract to be announced after the deal is completed.

Goulburn grocery store blaze extinguished

The fire started on November 7. (RNZ / Sigrid Denny)

A fire at a supermarket in Goulburn has been extinguished, after two days of intense firefighting.

The blaze has been kept under control while crews work closely with emergency services.

It was reported around 8pm when the roof collapsed.

The shop in the town had already been closed after its owners had been evacuated and there were no further injuries.

Firefighters were on standby for more suspicious incidents.

An investigation by emergency services would take more time.

No-one was in custody.

A shop manager said the fire had been extinguished by the time fire crews arrived.

"I have to tell you all I was shocked by it," Goulburn resident Jim O'Hare said.

"It wasn't like the stuff in the news and we didn't even know where we were or what time it was.

"I've never seen something like this as we know it's a serious situation."

A man who was in the store when it happened gave his name as Simon.

"At first I thought it was a joke," he said.

"When we got the fire, we looked around, and then the whole building was black and there was smoke in the shop."

Simon would have been in his 20s to 30s.

He said his neighbour was also in the store that night and had been injured in the blaze.

"I'm pretty sure there's a lot of people around the whole time, the fire alarm went off, the phone rings, and the emergency services didn't get there before it was too late."

He said the fire took the life of his younger brother and older sister.

"What we've seen so far is all we can do is let that be. It is too late."

Goulburn was placed on alert two weeks ago over a possible terror attack.

It was in an area of the town where the threat level had been raised to moderate.

In September a man was arrested and charged with planning a terrorist act.

The case was handed over to the security services for further inquiry.

No-one has been taken into police custody.

Labor emboldened to break ranks on refugee policy by Obama administration over refugee program

By Jason Brennan

24 April 2013

The largest Arab coalition in the Arab League (AQE) has called on Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan to take in 10,000 more Syrians fleeing the civil war, raising the prospect of a humanitarian catastrophe that could engulf Syria and potentially trigger a broader conflict in neighboring Iraq.

With the Islamic militant al Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) threatening the country's fragile unity and undermining the country's ruling regime, the coalition is increasingly concerned that the war in Syria could escalate into a global conflict. The meeting, which was held in the German capital of Berlin and was attended by the presidents of Kuwait, Qatar and Kuwait, called for Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia to take in 5,000 more people as well as an additional 10,000 refugees over the next six months.

The coalition called for Egypt and Jordan to begin immediate and unconditional refugee relocation to countries that have taken in large numbers of displaced people. "We urge you to take immediate steps to assist Syrians in Egypt and Jordan, while keeping a close eye on the situation in Iraq and consider opening up refugee camps to those seeking safe passage out of Syria," the statement from the Arab League said. The coalition statement cited a study from the European Community Commission, which concluded in April 2012 that "the UNHCR needs an extra $2bn a year over a six-year period to cope with the crisis in Syria."

With most of the international community already in abject shock over the slaughter of civilians and civilian infrastructure in Syria and the brutal and protracted regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a war without end would inevitably spark the worst refugee crisis since World War II, leaving millions facing an uncertain future.

As of late June, more than 2 million people have gathered in Paris to hold rallies for a universal day of action against the crisis. As the situation in Syria deteriorates even further, the demands of the Arab League to take in even more displaced Syrians in a few months are growing. The group has called on Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is leading the Syrian opposition against the Assad regime, to accept an increased number of refugees for the next six months.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the leader of the Islamist-dominated Muslim Brotherhood, and Saudi King Abdullah, who is backing the war in Syria, on Sunday gave their backing to a new draft agreement in Washington requiring that the United States, its key Middle East ally, take in 10,000 Syrian refugees within 90 days. The new deal would oblige the United States to accept Syrian refugees "from any region of the world" under a formula called "non-re

Pm lays out approach to indigenous affairs in the Amazon, based on a long history of the region, and suggests the best way forward is to work to reduce or eliminate environmental damage.

"With the largest indigenous communities, they need to come up with a sustainable model," she said. "This includes removing all of the mining operations, but in addition we also need to talk about things like reforestation of forests, but that's something we've already started, and we'll continue to invest in the future."

A court issued a warrant for his arrest

STADIUM CITY, Tenn. — A Tennessee judge refused Monday to extradite a woman charged with murdering her spouse and then selling his body parts to a dentist, according to court records.

The Tennessee Medical Examiner's Office on Friday confirmed that forensic testing of evidence from the case determined that the body parts of Robert E. Lee were legally obtained for an unidentified person when Elizabeth R. Grier shot her husband, John R. Williams Jr., on the morning of April 2, 2015.

Elizabeth R. Grier, 53, is charged with capital murder and discharging a firearm within one's home without a license. Her attorney has not returned a call seeking comment.

A federal grand jury in Nashville declined to indict the shooter on murder charges Friday afternoon after Grier failed to immediately turn over her weapons to the FBI, according to a U.S. Justice Department website about U.S. Marshals.

The FBI released photos of the weapons they found at Grier's home, with initials G, B and R stamped in black lettering.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam has been named acting governor on a temporary basis following reports that a court order requiring Grier to surrender her weapons had expired. She has remained on paid leave as state authorities investigate what led to the slaying.

A spokesman for Williams' attorneys, James Turet, did not return a call seeking comment.

In court papers filed earlier this month, federal prosecutors alleged in a statement that Williams had sought out Grier, a high school senior, after visiting an uncle in the region to buy an item for a home decoration. Williams also met in person with her uncle, who was the owner of a local gun shop, court papers said. Williams told the friend he was trying to sell an antique rifle for $350. When he met Grier, Williams offered her an eight-year license plate on which to write her last name, authorities said.

Grier allegedly killed her husband and then killed herself in 2015.

Court records also said she planned on selling her husband's body parts, which would have included his hands, feet and legs.

Toyne happy with jail changes

The commissioner also said she was happy with the changes made to her office since the federal trial ended.

"It's not like we're a bad place anymore," she said. "I think we're better."

Hollingworth, meanwhile, said the new law should not come as a surprise to anybody — not only the sheriff but the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Washington, who was initially disappointed to learn the new rules would have no effect on the jail.

"I think (U.S. Attorney) Rod Rosenstein's office is quite proud of the changes that have been made." - Jeff Holland, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington

"I'm all about the good work that the Sheriff's Office, especially our criminal division, is doing," Holland said. "We do this on the premise that that community is as good as we can make it. It's very, very good work."

But, Holland said, the changes to the office — which included cutting its staff by 23 percent and downsizing the jails — made it the wrong place for the department to move forward.

"I do believe that if we were making progress in terms of our overall law enforcement performance... I am not seeing our overall department as better than it should be." - Jeff Holland, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington

The judge also called out Deputy Chief Tim Kester for his role in the jail's management crisis.

Kester, who resigned in July, was among the staffers who walked away from a meeting with deputy Chief Scott Williams with the understanding they would be transferred from the jail to the Seattle police department to oversee the changeover. They say they were told that, because they are working for the sheriff, Williams wouldn't be working with them.

"I'm all about the good work that the Sheriff's Office, especially our criminal division, is doing. We do this on the premise that that community is as good as we can make it. It's very, very good work."

Hollingworth said it's not his place to talk about why Kester did what he did, and she doesn't know why he didn't follow the Sheriff's Office's decision.

"I'm confident in the outcome, as he was successful and ultimately, we want to keep him in the office. We do it so we can stay true to where he's at — at the very bottom of the ladder."

But she said the change may just add to the department's problems if it means employees may be less likely to pursue cases against the police.

Hollingworth also addressed concerns about the department's ability t

Mark winterbottom's v8 title hopes take a hit but he continues to do all he can. Photo by Michael Cooper, Getty Images

"I don't know if it's a loss because he's still a good guy, I'm sure he will always want to win, because he's so talented," said his partner, L.V. Lewis. "He's such a great driver. He's a great guy to have on your team."

Winterbottom himself was aware of the uncertainty surrounding his future and said that he wasn't sure if he could carry on with the team as it was before the weekend.

"I have a contract to run with the team, and I haven't spoken to the management yet, but I feel like I'm in good hands," Winterbottom said.

"I've got a lot of good friends, I mean my family, who I talk to on the phone every single day and every single day, so they support me through it, even though it's hard. But hopefully the team feels like he's more than just a teammate. I guess they are."

Winterbottom has been unable to finish races this year, which has left him to rely on the advice of fellow co-drivers Tony Kanaan and Graham Rahal, to help secure a top four finish at Phoenix.

"They've always helped me the most," Winterbottom admitted. "They tell me how to run, what gear to get, all that.

"They know I have such a good team around me and they help me with every little thing, which I appreciate."

Eden depot preparing for new weapons

On Tuesday, September 7, a truck drove into the headquarters of Germany's defence ministry (BND) building in Berlin. It was filled with dozens of empty arms boxes. The soldiers had gathered at the front desk to collect their weapons as Germany was preparing for a new weapons offensive against Russia in eastern Ukraine. The BND had just sent in a task force, including thousands of German soldiers from the Bundeswehr unit, to Russia to strengthen defences in Ukraine and to reinforce border defences. The soldiers were expected to be deployed in the coming weeks. For a few moments they seemed to be in mourning. But now the mood has changed.

When soldiers return home from war, the country is still in its initial shock and horror phase as their lives are turned upside down by the events that have taken place. Most Germans cannot understand why Russia invaded and annexed Ukraine's Crimean peninsula; they just know that their soldiers are being trained on how to fight against the regime of Vladimir Putin.

The new policy will probably be a success, for a number of reasons. First, the new security partnership between Europe and Russia is the best possible scenario for Germany and the US.

The EU-Russia defence pact

Russia has been trying to gain access to NATO since the 1970s. Moscow has a special relationship with the European Union that runs deep, dating back to when Russia was an independent nation, with two members – Great Britain and Poland. But today it is Europe's largest economy, having grown by 9% per year in real terms in the past decade to become the largest economy in the Western hemisphere – larger even than Canada, which is also a member of the European Union.

The Russian Federation, for years its closest competitor, has seen a gradual process of economic decline. Russia's economy is also heavily dependent on oil exports to the EU, and this is one of the factors Russia was trying to keep from becoming a member of NATO.

Yet, despite the difficulties, Germany was eager to join NATO for much the same reasons as Russia had been. Germany believes in the concept of an integrated and reliable foreign policy. Therefore, it would prefer that the EU be a partner that can contribute to the long term interests of its members, particularly in the field of defense.

In the 1980s, Germany joined NATO because the alliance was seeking to prevent the Soviet Union from developing weapons of mass destruction. And, while it does not currently have nuclear weapons, the US, which has no comparable capability, has the capability to deliver them over long distances. However, the EU is keen to use that technological advantage to counter any future threats from Moscow.

The new security cooperation policy should help to address this issue. And Germany, which already has one of the worl
