桑野信介(阿部寛)は腕のいい建築士だが、「メリットがない」という考えから結婚の経験はなく、さらに、偏屈で皮肉屋、プライドが高くこだわりも強いので、恋人を作ることもなく、気楽なシングルライフを送っていた。母の桑野育代(草笛光子)と妹の中川圭子(三浦理恵子)は、そんな“結婚できない"桑野の性格を嘆くが、唯一、義弟の中川良雄(尾美としのり)だけは良き理解者。さらに、かつての部下で、現在は共同経営者の村上英治(塚本高史)も、長年の付き合いから桑野の性格を熟知していた。  そんなある日、日課のエゴサーチで発見した桑野を非難している“やっくんのブログ"に関して、近所で事務所を構えていた弁護士の吉山まどか(吉田羊)に相談する。例のごとく、偏屈な発言を連発する桑野の言動にまどかは「敵を作りやすい」とチクリ。しかし、嫌味など意に介さない桑野は、後日、まどかの弁護士としての実力を測るべく裁判所を訪れ、驚くまどかをしり目に離婚裁判を傍聴するのであった。  まどかは、夫からの離婚の申し出に同意しない妻・岡野有希江(稲森いずみ)の代理人で、この日は原告である夫の浮気が争点に。しかし、浮気を決定づける証拠はなく、有希江は圧倒的不利な状況。しかし閉廷後、桑野は偶然トイレで原告の夫と弁護士のある話を聞いてしまう。  一方、桑野が暮らすマンションの隣の部屋には、若い女性、戸波早紀(深川麻衣)が引っ越してきて…。
